LEG STRENGTH TEST

Equipment Required:

1. Back/leg dynamometer and hip belt.

Procedure:

1. Instruct the subject on the purpose of the test.

2. The subject stands on the platform with the feet a comfortable distance apart for balance, usually of shoulder width distance.

3. Place the hip belt around the subject just above the hips, with the ends looped over each end of the bar of the dynamometer and pushed towards the centre. The hands grasp each end of the bar.

4. Instruct the subject to flex the knees to approximately 135 degrees. Ensure the back is kept straight and the hips positioned directly over the ankle joints. The chest should be forward and the head erect.

5. The pointer should be zeroed and a spotter standing behind the subject.

6. The subject takes in a large breath and slowly exhales as he/she attempts to extend the knees smoothly and as forcefully as possible. It is important to ensure that the hips rise vertically.

7. To encourage the subject, the tester should call out encouragement.

8. Stop the test when the pointer ceases to advance or if the subject’s knee straightened.

9. Enter the results into the data entry screen.

10. After at least two minutes rest repeat the above procedure, adjusting for a more favourable knee angle where necessary.

11. A third attempt may be made if the tester is not satisfied that a maximum effort has been achieved.

12. Enter the results into the data entry screen.
